If regular Runtz is the hero, Leafly says, Black Runtz is the dark twin. Runtz itself is the Zkittlez × Gelato cross popularised by the Runtz crew out of Long Beach, and Leafly named it its Strain of the Year in 2020. Leafly lists Black Runtz as a phenotype of that cross, sharing the same Zkittlez and Gelato parents.
Who first made it is less clear. Leafly credits Big Boss Farms, and Philosopher Seeds says the strain is rumoured to come from that low-key boutique brand in Burnaby, British Columbia, though no one has formally taken credit. Since then seed companies have built their own versions, most of them crossing either Zkittlez with Gelato or Black Diamond Sherbet with Runtz. Either way, the Runtz line sits at the heart of it.

Height varies a lot between versions, so give the plant room to stretch in early flower. Low-stress training opens up the canopy and adds bud sites. It suits a temperate to Mediterranean season outdoors. As with most dense-budding hybrids, keep the air moving and the humidity down in late flower to protect the buds from moisture problems, and check that an October finish comes before your first autumn frost.

Sweet Flavor, Heavy Chill
Black Runtz grew short and chunky, with dense buds coated in frost. The smell is sweet and candy-like with a deep, gassy edge. Smoke is smooth, and the high comes on happy and relaxing, then settles into a heavy body calm. Great strain for winding down without feeling totally knocked out.
