White Widow is one of the most famous cannabis strains ever created. First released in 1994 and winner of the 1995 High Times Cannabis Cup, this balanced hybrid has been a cornerstone of Amsterdam coffeeshop menus and global cannabis culture for over three decades. Known for its extraordinary trichome production, balanced effects, and reliable growing characteristics, White Widow remains a benchmark strain that every serious grower should experience.

Genetics & Lineage

White Widow was created by Shantibaba while working at Green House Seeds in the Netherlands. The genetics combine a Brazilian Sativa landrace mother, rumored to be the Manga Rosa variety, with a South Indian Indica landrace father sourced during a trip to India in the early 1990s. This pairing of two pure landrace genetics from different continents produced exceptional hybrid vigor, which explains the strain’s legendary resilience, potency, and trichome production. Shantibaba later left Green House Seeds to found Mr. Nice Seeds, where the original White Widow genetics continue under different names.

Appearance

The name says it all. White Widow is famous for its extremely heavy trichome coverage, which creates a thick white crystal coating that makes buds appear almost snow-covered. Beneath the frost, dense, chunky buds display a slightly conical shape with light to medium green coloring and subtle hints of dark purple. Orange pistils weave through the flowers, darkening to amber as the buds mature. The sheer volume of trichome production is what earned this strain its name and made it one of the most visually striking cultivars in cannabis history.

Aroma & Flavor

White Widow presents an earthy and woody base aroma layered with spicy herbal notes and a pine-fresh scent. Hints of citrus add brightness, while the overall profile remains pungent, sharp, and resinous, reflecting the heavy trichome production. On the palate, clean pine and earthy notes lead the inhale, followed by hints of citrus sweetness. The exhale brings a subtly sweet and slightly spicy aftertaste with woody and herbal undertones. The smoke is smooth and resinous, delivering a well-rounded flavor that has made it a favorite among connoisseurs for decades.

Effects

White Widow delivers a balanced experience that works both mind and body. The high begins with an energetic, euphoric head rush that promotes creativity, talkativeness, and sharp mental focus. As the cerebral effects settle in, a relaxing body high follows that relieves stress and physical tension without heavy sedation or couch-lock. With THC levels in the 18 to 25 percent range, White Widow provides significant potency in a well-rounded package. The balanced 50-50 hybrid nature means the strain adapts well to various situations, from social gatherings and creative work to quiet evenings of unwinding after a long day.

Growing Information

White Widow is widely considered one of the easiest strains to grow, making it an excellent choice for first-time growers. The exceptional hybrid vigor inherited from its two landrace parents gives this strain natural resistance to pests, mold, and temperature fluctuations that would stress less resilient cultivars. Indoor plants stay manageable at 60 to 100 centimeters, while outdoor specimens can reach 150 to 200 centimeters with room to spread. The flowering period is a quick 8 to 9 weeks, and outdoor harvests typically land in late October. Indoor yields reach 450 to 500 grams per square meter, while outdoor plants produce an impressive 550 to 600 grams each. White Widow adapts to a wide range of climates, preferring mild Mediterranean conditions around 70 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit but handling temperature swings and cooler weather better than most strains. It performs equally well indoors, outdoors, and in greenhouses, making it one of the most versatile cultivars available.

Frosty Classic That Never Fails

14 January 2026

White Widow photoperiod grew vigorous and consistent, with thick branches and buds absolutely covered in resin. The aroma is classic—earthy, piney, with a slight sweetness. The high is balanced and long-lasting: uplifting at first, then calm and relaxed. A reliable strain I’ll always keep around.
